How to Tank in Monster Hunter? (Basic)

I have posted topic about my Minstrel Tank build & list of tank gears. Check the related post link above ☝. Now it is time for us to learn how to tank in monster hunter.

Tank Role Skills

First of all, we must understand all of the tank role skills in Monster Hunter.


Sentinel
In game description: 

Passive: Receive 15% less damage from all sources. Deal -15% reduced damage to all enemies.

Active: Taunt your target significantly increasing your aggro.

Usage: Tank must go first and use Sentinel on Great Monsters before DPS start hitting them. After using the Sentinel, make sure the Red  aggro (What is Aggro?) icon is on you. Make sure the Red aggro is always on you. If you lose the Red aggro, use Sentinel again on the Great Monster as fast as possible. If Red aggro on other member & Sentinel on cooldown, tell them to move to safe area. Wait until Sentinel cooldown gone & use it again on the Great Monster

Red Aggro (Highest Aggro).

Climactic Fury
In game description:

Passive: When hit (got hit by mobs), you will gain Fury. Fury may stack to a maximum of 6 with each stack increasing defence [1 stack = 3%, 2 stack = 7%, 3 stack = 11%, 4 stack = 16%, 5 stack = 21%, 6 stack = 26%]. Fury stacks can only be gained every 3 seconds with a 10 second duration. When the duration ends, the stacks will decrease by one.

Offensive: Unleash your Fury, expending all stacks to inflict catastrophic damage to the target. Dealing further bonus damage if all 6 stacks were unleashed. Upon attacking you are left Emotionally Exhausted, unable to generate Fury and unabled to re-cast Climactic Fury for 15 secs. The severity of the attack is determined by Weapon ATK, Equip ATK, total HP, Hard DEF, and is further increased based on how much Health you are currently missing.

Usage: For Garranth/Garronath run, Climactic Fury (CF) is used to kill them faster. Keep spamming CF until your run completed. If you can't tank well, better to keep the Fury stacks so you receive less damage as stated in the description. For Nyia/Nysori run, most tank only use CF to kill the Charming Allure Clone. Especially in Nysori run, the Clone can 1 hit kill players. It's highly recommended to use CF with 6 stacks for highest damage to sure kill the clone. Note that you can only gain Fury stack if the Red aggro on you. As long you have the Red Aggro, you can gain the Fury stack from any monster. Red Aggro can only be gained from Great Monster.

Vanguard
In game description:

Active: Completely block the next incoming attack. After blocking gain an extra Fury stack, as well as gain a buff which grants +15% Max HP and -20% After Cast Delay for 15 seconds. Block Duration 1 second.

Usage: Mostly, I use Vanguard to gain extra Fury stack faster so I can use next CF faster. To gain the extra Fury stack & also the Vanguard effect, make sure you got hit by Great Monster during the cast time. If not, you won't gain extra Fury stack & also the +15% Max HP & -20% ACD. Also, as shown in the gif below, I received 1 damage after casting Vanguard. Tho I'm not sure if it intended that there is a 1~2 second delay before I receive 1 damage after casting Vanguard. Vanguard also helps in increasing CF damage since it gives bonus Max HP. You can use Vanguard before using CF.

Defiant Stand
In game description:

Active: Defiantly take a stand, protecting yourself from any source of damage. Such an act of defiance fatigues you, making you less of a threat to an enemy while protected. Immune to all damage. Unable to generate Agrro. Duration 15 secs. Cooldown 4 minutes.

Usage: Defiant Stand (DS) completely immune to all damage. This skill is good to use during emergency especially when u low HP. Use wisely because the cooldown is really high. I recommend to use it during Ice Cage in Nysori hunt. Use when needed.

Elemental Aegis
In game description:

Active: Grant 20% resistance to all elements and increase max elemental cap by 5% for 15 seconds. Fury cost: 2.

Usage: Tbh, I rarely use this skill. Mostly I use during Nysori's Ice Trap for less damage from the ice meteor. You guys can figure it out when/what else situation it's good to be used.

Development Minstrel Tank Build in Monster Hunter 2

Here I wanna share my Minstrel Tank build for Nysori hunt. I wanna share my Tank build development from the beginning when I started to play as Tank Minstrel till present day. I will explain as short & as details as possible why I change from this to that. For my early development, I not able to go much details becoz I forgot ๐Ÿ˜. Well at least I will explain a little what & why I had to improve the gears.

I hope with this sharing from me, u guys will get an idea how to make Tank build in MH2. Also, recording this development will give benefits to me myself to be better. Last but not least, forgive my english! I'm not really good in english. So bear with me ๐Ÿ˜†

Also keep in mind that, there many more different kind of tank build. This guide is just my own build. So no need to exactly follow my build 100%. There maybe better build than mine.

And before we go to my build development, as Tank, u MUST understand the basic on how damage reduction works. I wont go to much details coz I'm not an expert. I will make it short & simple as I can. I will just share from what I learned.

Basic Damage Reduction (How it works?)

Both Physical & Magical damage can be reduced by Race, Size, Elemental modifiers. The only difference is that Physical damage can be reduced by DEF, while Magical damage can be reduced by MDEF. This means damage from any monster skills and also normal attack, can be reduced by Race, Size & Elemental modifiers. Since Nysori is Fish & Large, u can reduce her skill damage by using gears/cards with Fish Resist & Large Monster Resist. NOTE: Race & Size modifiers doesnt work on Ice Meteor in Ice Trap Nysori. Not sure about other skills.

Also keep in mind that every normal/auto attack from monster are neutral property. Tho, most monsters has a element property attack. This elemental attack is a insta cast skill that seems like normal attack. For example Nysori has water elemental attack (WaterAttack). U will notice that tank receive damage from Nysori for example 2000, 2000, 5000. That 2000 is normal attack from Nysori while that 5000 is the element attack from Nysori. That's why the damage higher than normal attack damage. I still don't know the elemental attack from Garronath.

And remember, for damage reduction, less type of modifiers are better. I mean it's better u stack Fish type only instead of combining Fish + Large. Why is that? Becoz the formula is "multiplicative", NOT "additive". Lemme give u example by simple calculation below.

Let say the original damage u received from monster is 1000.

If u have 30% Fish Resist, final damage u will receive is:
Damage received = Damage × (1 - Race Resist %) =
1000 × (1 - 30%) = 700 final damage

If u have 10% Fish Resist and 20% Large Resist,  it's NOT gonna be 10% + 20% = 30%. But this:
Damage received = Damage × (1 - Race Resist %) × (1 - Large Resist %) = 
1000 × (1 - 10%) × (1 - 20%) = 720 final damage

As u can see example above, stacking 1 type of resist is better.

Here I prepared a build template & damage reduction calculator for you guys. This build template will make it easier for us to evaluate our build. Simply fill in the info in the table, it will auto calculate your total stats from gears. The calculator used to determine which combination of resist gears are the best by looking that the overall damage reduction. From the calculator, try to get at least 80% overall damage reduction to be viable in MH 2 star hunt. For 1 star hunt, I think maybe 70% is enough.

COMMENTS/DETAILS

Good:
  • Tbh, I dunno what is good with this build ๐Ÿ˜†.

Bad:
  • Holding aggro. Holding aggro using Musical Strike with this build is bad becoz of lack VCTR & ASPD. Losing aggro quite frequent. Thanks to sentinel skill & use it ASAP when lose aggro, I still able to hold it. It still bad coz I lose aggro quite easily. 

  • Tanking normal/auto attack damage. The damage I received with this build is quite high. Tho I dont remember how much damage I received. Lack Hard DEF & resist.

  • Can't one shot charm clone. Regarding one shot charm clone, I really wanna make this clear to all of u. Able to one shot charm is NOT a must for Tank with party consist of 3 DPS. Having a Tank that can one short charm is just an advantage for party with 3 DPS. U guys just need to plan before fight.

Bad:
  • Holding aggro. Same problem as in 1st build. At this time, still no idea how to improve in holding aggro.

  • Can't one shot charm clone. Same problem as in 1st build

COMMENTS

This build is good enough to be to tank both Nysori's Auto/Normal Attack & Skills.

Good:
  • More HP than 2nd build. HP from the armor card & rigid insignia.

  • More Hard DEF than 1st build. Hard DEF from armor card.

  • Able to survive 1 minute without AB. If AB die, I able to hold for 1 minute until AB come back join the fight.

  • Holding aggro. With auto attack, I can hold aggro better. Need high ASPD. I think, minimum ASPD to hold aggro better is 188 (?)

  • Able to one short charm. The factors that affect CF damage are Current HP, Total HP, Hard DEF, WeaponATK & EquipATK. AFAIK, Hard DEF is the weakest factor. I dunno which factor is the the strongest that contribute more to CF.

Bad:
  • As said above, this build is good enough to tank Nysori. So far, I dont see anything bad/downside with this build.

COMMENTS

Why I made 4th build? 
Good question. Well, I just want to be more tanky & more ASPD. Why? just to fill my desires ๐Ÿ˜. But at the cost of Total HP. With this build, I'm more tanky which make easier for AB to outheal (p/s: Hope "outheal" is the correct word๐Ÿ˜†) the damage I received. The lowest CF damage I dealt so far is 20m. AFAIK, the minimum damage required to one short charm clone is 19m.

Why do I use Dancing Marionette card instead of card with ATK or Modifier?
Well, becoz I want high ASPD without needs in using Agi Tonic. Also, my CF damage is enough to one short the charm clone. If I don't have the complete Minstrel Shadow Set, I might need another White Knight card or Contaminated Wanderer card. Also, Flora card also help increase CF damage.

Table below shows effect from each gears & total of each effect. The DEF from refinement bonus are not included in this table. Only from the equipments & cards are shown.



Ok now lets see my some of my battlestats info (with +6 foods, Clementia & Canto buff, Echo Song, Frigg's song, Concentration Potion, Attention Concentrate buff, Coldproof pot):

Total Hard DEF  : 1396 (69% physical damage reduction)
ASPD                   : 193

Neutral Resist     : 25% (-10% included inside MH)
Water Resist        : 50% (-15% included inside MH)
Large Resist        : 30%


Good:
  • More tanky. As stated above, with this build, I lost some of my Total HP. But, losing HP is not a problem as long as u received less damage. The damage I received is around 1.5k~3k. 

  • Able to survive 1 minute without AB. If AB die, I able to hold for 1 minute until AB come back join the fight.

  • Holding aggro. With auto attack, I can hold aggro better. Need high ASPD. I think, minimum ASPD to hold aggro better is 192 (?)

  • Able to one short charm. The factors that affect CF damage are Current HP, Total HP, Hard DEF, WeaponATK & EquipATK.
Bad:
  • So far, I dont see anything bad/downside with build.

!!! NEW TANK ROLE UPDATE !!!

So, after the new tank role update (check here: Tank Update Patch Notes), I'm having a problem not able to one shot Nysori charm clone using Climactic Fury (CF). So I made a few changes in my gears, new consumable & new playstyle to be able to one shot charm. Now I'm able to one shot charm clone again using CF. Not much changes, but here how I do it:

1) Change card in armor from Contaminated Raydric → Ominous Solider to increase HP.
2) Before use CF, swap to Giant Snake Skin for bonus HP (need combo with Temporal Boots)
3) Before use CF, use Vanguard (Tank role skill) and let Nysori hit you to get the bonus Max HP for 15 secs
4) Use Vit Tonic.

Garronath Build (Current Build)

Well, for my Garronath build, the only differences are Mid Head, Shield & Garment.

Mid Head: 3D Glasses
Shield: Cursed Knight Shield with Sky Petite card
Garment: Dragon Breath with Raydric card.

Summary

To be a good tank, u need these:
  1. High HP & damage reduction (ex: Hard DEF, Race Resist, Size Resist etc.). U must at least able to survive about 1 minute without AB.
  2. Able to hold aggro well. U dont need damage to hold aggro but u need ASPD or spammable skill.
  3. Knows what to do like dodging mechanic, what & when Tank's skill to use.
